How to play the G Major guitar chord: Chart, Photo, and Description
To play the G Major chord, place your left hand fingers on the following strings and frets:
- Middle (Finger 2): Fret 2, String 5 (B)
- Ring (Finger 3): Fret 3, String 6 (G)
- Pinky (Finger 4): Fret 3, String 1 (G)
- You can play the following open strings:
- String 4 (open D)
- String 3 (open G)
- String 2 (open B)
- Since string 6 (G) is the root of the chord, you can play strum or pluck all six strings of the guitar with confidence!
Despite being one of the most common “beginner” chords, the G major chord can be difficult to play because of the wide vertical stretch between your ring and pinky fingers.
