“Californication” is the 1999 title track from the Red Hot Chili Peppers’
comeback album — and one of John Frusciante’s most recognizable guitar parts.
The song’s structure is friendlier than its reputation suggests: verses and
interludes just rock back and forth between Am and F, and the chorus adds C, G,
and Dm.
The solo modulates to a brighter key and brings in barre chords, so it’s the
one section that asks more of you — everything before it stays in comfortable
open-chord territory. The iconic clean intro riff is tabbed out below too.

F and Fmaj7 — a gift for beginners
The song deliberately swaps between F and Fmaj7 depending on the section: verses
use F, pre-choruses use Fmaj7. Fmaj7 needs no barre, so if the full F is still
giving you trouble, play Fmaj7 everywhere. Because the song already alternates
between the two, that reads as an arrangement choice rather than a shortcut — and
it’s a genuinely lovely way to hear this song.
Practice Tips
- Am to F (or Fmaj7) is the backbone of this entire song. Every verse, every interlude, every pre-chorus rocks between those two chords. Drill that one change and most of the song is yours.
- The chorus is where the other chords finally arrive: C, G, Dm, Am. Practice it separately from the verses, since it’s the only place those changes happen.
- The intro riff is the song’s signature and worth learning, but it’s not required — strumming the Am and F bars underneath works fine while you’re getting the chord changes solid.
- Let the clean tone breathe. This is a song built on space and restraint, not aggression. Light strumming with the notes ringing out will get you much closer to the record than digging in hard.
