How to play the F7 guitar chord: Charts and Description

Below are a couple of different ways you can play the F7 chord on guitar.

Option 1: Remove Finger 4

F7 guitar chord chart easy variation where you remove finger 4.

The easiest option for playing the F7 chord looks similar to the full F major chord shape, but you remove finger 4 from string 4. As a result, the note that was an F becomes an Eb played with the barre.

This shape is also similar to the E7 option 1, but uses different left hand fingers because you need to use finger 1 as a barre chord.

To play this F7 chord, place your left hand fingers on the following strings and frets:

  • Index (Finger 1): Full Barre on Fret 1, all 6 strings
    • String 6 (F)
    • String 4 (Eb)
    • String 2 (C)
    • String 1 (F)
  • Middle (Finger 2): Fret 2, String 3 (A)
  • Ring (Finger 3): Fret 3, String 5 (C)

Similar to other barre chord shapes, the initial challenge is to apply enough pressure and accuracy with the index finger on the strings to make a clean sound. But remember, you have other fingers covering some of the strings (in this case, strings 5 and 3)! Therefore, you can stagger the pressure of your index finger to only add weight to string 6, 4, 2, and 1.

Option 2: Add Pinky to String 2 Fret 4

The second option for an F7 chord shape is more complex, and similar to the E7 option 2 shape. However, the fingering is slightly different since you need to use finger 1 as a barre on fret 1.

This F7 option involves adding pinky onto fret 4, string 2 (Eb), thereby doubling the 7th of the chord. Since this shape spans across four frets, you might find it especially difficult to play if you’re a beginner. that said, the additional 7th (Eb) note on string 2 rings out more clearly in this variation, and sounds beautiful.

To play this variation:

  • Index (Finger 1): Full Barre on Fret 1, all six Strings:
    • String 1 (F)
    • String 4 (Eb)
    • String 6 (F)
  • Pinky (Finger 4): Fret 4, String 2 (F)
  • Middle (Finger 2): Fret 2, String 3 (A)
  • Ring (Finger 3): Fret 3, String 5 (C)
